We Rise

Throughout the course of this We Rise Project the young people involved learnt about what happened before, during and after the Brixton Uprisings in 1981, creating a series of short films that are borne out of their personal responses to what they have discovered. Young people are only taught a very narrow view of black British history at school and those living in Brixton today do not know about the important events that happened on their doorstep 40 years ago. This series of personal and creative films, some of which were self-made, share their views and experiences of living in Lambeth today and what they want the community to be like going forward.

Quote from a participant in the project

“I joined this project because as a young black female I’m not exposed to things about my history in Britain as much as I’d like to be. I’d like to learn about the 81 Acts because I feel like it would give me some support in how I feel about the racial injustice in the UK and it’s important to me because this is the place that my mother and grandmother were brought up; in Brixton. It is special to me.”
